COLLEGE STATION - Sophomore distance runner Brian Barraza broke his own school record in the men's 3000m race, on the second day of the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational, on Saturday, in College Station, Texas.
Barraza ran the 3000m in 8:07.27 shattering his own previous record of 8:16.84, which the El Paso, Texas native set last season at the same meet. Barraza's teammate, senior Yonas Tesfai also broke the previous school record by running an 8:08.86 and shaving nearly 11 seconds off his previous personal best.
Barraza has continued what has been an impressive career in his short time as a Cougar. The former Franklin High School standout qualified for the NCAA Championships during the Cross Country season after a fourth place finish at the South Central Regional and competed for Team USA last summer in distance running.
Houston used the weekend primarily to fine-tune performances in certain events and to gain some much needed rest in other areas. The distance runners showed the most benefit from this weekend, earning 10 new personal records in the competition, while the rest of the team earned a combined 16 new personal bests.
UP NEXT
Houston will split up its squad next weekend with some of the team staying home to compete in the Houston Tune Up at the Yeoman Fieldhouse, while others will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to take part in the Tyson Invitational. The Houston Tune Up will run all day Friday, Feb. 13, while the Tyson Invitational is a two-day meet held on Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14.
