HOUSTON - With the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships just a week away, the Cougars will use the Alex Wilson Invitational to fine-tune its Distance Medley Relay team on Saturday, Feb. 21, in South Bend, Ind.
Seniors Yonas Tesfai and Drevan Anderson-Kaapa, along with sophomore Brian Barraza and freshman Trumaine Jefferson are scheduled to compete in the men's distance medley relay. The relay will be broken into two sections, with seven teams competing in each section. Houston is scheduled to compete against Arkansas, Virginia, Wake Forrest, Alabama, Loyola (Ill.) and Texas in the second heat, while the first heat will consist of Iowa State, Stanford, Oklahoma, Columbia, Indiana, Nebraska and Illinois.
The Distance Medley Relay, unlike a traditional relay, consists of four athletes on each team, all running a different distance. Tesfai in the first leg will run 1200m (six laps around an indoor track), Jefferson will run 400m in the second leg (two laps), Anderson-Kappa will go 800m (four laps) in the third leg, and Barraza will anchor the race by running 1600m (eight laps) for the final leg.
Houston won the men's Distance Medley Relay at the inaugural American Athletic Conference championships one year ago. Barraza, and fellow teammates Trevor Walker, Dominique Charles, and Mark Fernando combined to finish the race in 10:00.30.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
With the majority of Houston's student-athletes having this weekend off from competition, the Cougars look ahead to next week's American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships to be held Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28 at The Armory in New York, N.Y.
