Houston Drops Tuesday Battle at No. 1/1 UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Houston women's basketball team fell to No. 1/1 UConn, 85-26, on Tuesday night at the XL Center.
Led by forward Tyler Gilbert, the Cougars were able to challenge the top-ranked Huskies on the glass. Gilbert pulled in seven rebounds, and as a team Houston pulled in 11 offensive boards. The double-digit effort was the 16th of the season for Houston.
On the offensive end, freshman Mariah Mitchell showed a glimpse of her immense potential. The rookie from McKinney led the Cougars with nine points.

TURNING POINT
Houston struggled offensively out of the gates, missing 16 of their first 20 shots. Though the Cougar defense was stout, UConn took advantage of the scoring issues, building their first 20-point lead on a Kiah Stokes 3-point play with 5:54 left in the first half. They led for the remainder of the game.
TOP PERFORMERS
Houston: Mitchell led Houston in scoring for the fourth time overall and the third time in American play. Gilbert paced the club in rebounding for 13th time in 2014-15.
UConn: Reigning national player of the year Breanna Stewart led all players with 26 points on 11-for-16 shooting. Morgan Tuck, Gabby Williams and Moriah Jefferson each scored a dozen.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Huskies shot 56.1 percent for the night (37-for-66), while Houston finished at 20.3 percent (12-for-59)
- Houston held the Huskies below their season scoring average by four points.
- The Cougars played tough perimeter defense, holding UConn to 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) shooting from outside.
- Bianca Winslow led Houston with two assists and a steal. Mitchell also recorded one theft in the game.
- The Coogs trailed at halftime, 39-12. Mitchell led Houston with four points at intermission.
NEWS & NOTES
- Marche' Amerson started her 87th career game on Tuesday, moving to 10th all-time in Houston history.
- Mitchell now has 21 3-pointers this season and needs three to pass Amerson for ninth in UH freshman history.
- The Cougars are now 0-12 in their history against No. 1-ranked opponents.
- UConn is now 3-0 all-time against the Cougars.

Fans who attend all four events have a chance to be named the Coogs' Most Dedicated Fan. Houston fans can pick up their Dedicated Coog card at the Women's Basketball game at Hofheinz Pavilion and pick up their first of four hole-punches. Fans who enter the venue of each sporting event and show their Dedicated Coog card will receive a hole-punch from the Houston Athletics Marketing Department.
Receive a fourth punch and turn in a completed card at Hofheinz at the Men's Basketball game and fans will receive a special edition Coogs' Most Dedicated Fan t-shirt and be entered into the Coogs' Most Dedicated Fan grand prize consisting of batting practice for two with Houston Baseball, throwing out the first pitch at the March 22 Houston Softball game vs. USF, a suite for 20 at the March 1 Houston Men's Basketball game vs. USF, serve as the honorary head coach for the March 2 Houston Women's Basketball game vs. Temple and receive two field passes for the Houston Football Spring Game on April 18.
