PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Houston sophomore Despoina Vogasari has been named American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced today. This is Vogasari's second weekly American honor this season.
Playing from the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles, Vogasari guided Houston to a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents last week. In a 5-2 victory over No. 57 Washington State on Feb. 6, the sophomore teamed with Elena Kordolaimi to win a vital doubles match, 6-2, over the regionally-ranked duo of Lize Leenknecht and Elizaveta Luzina. In singles play, Vogasari rallied to top Luzina, 7-5, 6-3.
One day later, Vogasari won a crucial singles victory over No. 90 Elianne Douglas-Miron of Washington, 7-5, 6-3. The point was a huge piece of Houston's 4-3 victory over the 42nd-ranked Huskies.
Vogasari is 17-3 on the season, with six wins over nationally-ranked opponents and a 6-0 spring mark. This is her fifth career American Player of the Week honor, and she was twice honored as the conference's Player of the Month in the fall 2014 season.
The Athens, Greece native spent the past month ranked No. 21 nationally and No. 1 in the Texas Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
