Men's Hoops Welcomes Valentine Sangoyomi
11/15/2015 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

HOUSTON â€" Northern Oklahoma College center Valentine Sangoyomi joined the University of Houston Men's Basketball program after recently signing a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Sunday.
Sangoyomi, whose last name is pronounced Shahn-Go-Yah-Me â€" will compete as a junior during the 2016-17 season and have two years of eligibility remaining. At 6-foot-11 and 250 pounds, he will give the Cougars a formidable presence in the frontcourt. He chose Houston over Kansas State, Mississippi State, Rhode Island, Middle Tennessee and Temple.
He has already started the 2015-16 season in impressive fashion. Through the first seven games, Sangoyomi has grabbed at least seven rebounds in all but one contest, including a career-high 22 boards in a 92-56 win against Bethel on Nov. 7.
"Valentine is a huge, physical presence. With the bigs in our league, he can physically match up with anyone. He can catch and score on the low block and has good hands," Sampson said. "This is a process, and we are building at that 5 spot. In this signing class, we wanted to get size, rebounding and a shooter, and we addressed both those needs."
Sangoyomi became the second student-athlete to sign with the Cougars during the fall signing period. He joined McNeil High School guard Armoni Brooks, who signed earlier this week.
As a sophomore at Northern Oklahoma College, he averaged 6.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game while splitting time at center for Head Coach Donnie Jackson. He also buried more than 55 percent of his field goal attempts while leading the Mavericks to 19 wins and a 12-6 conference mark.
Sangoyomi, who hails from Lagos, Nigeria, totaled 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 75-54 win over Murray State College and posted 13 points and 12 boards at Labette Community College.
Before entering joining Northern Oklahoma College, Sangoyomi was a prep star at Erie First Christian Academy. As a junior during the 2012-13 season, he averaged 17.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game on the way to being named the team's Most Valuable Player.
