COLLEGE STATION, Texas - University of Houston Tennis junior Despoina Vogasari fought valiantly but fell Monday in the Singles Championship Match of the 2015 USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Earlier in the day, Vogasari knocked off yet another ranked opponent to advance to the title match.
No. 42 Vogasari opened the day in the Semifinals against No. 31 Saska Gavrilovska of Texas A&M. The Athens, Greece, native started strong, dominating the first set, 6-1. Gavrilovska rallied to build a 5-2 lead in the second set before Vogasari stormed back in commanding fashion. The Houston junior won the final five games to win the second set and clinch a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
The win over Gavrilovska was Vogasari's 13th career triumph over a nationally ranked opponent and her third such victory this season. The win also gave Vogasari 11 straight victories at the Texas Regional Championships, including last season's run to the title.
With the win, Vogasari booked a spot in the finals against No. 48 Breaunna Addison of Texas. Vogasari won the opening set, 6-3, before Addison rallied to win the second, 6-2. With the match tied, the two players went to a third set to determine the Texas Regional Champion.
Unfortunately for Vogasari, the Texas senior was able to take the final set. Addison claimed the victory, 6-1, to secure a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win.
Despite the loss, Vogasari posted an incredible 2015 fall season. The junior went 9-2 in the fall, including a perfect 3-0 record at the Rice Invitational in September and five singles victories at the Texas Regional Championships. After winning the Texas Regionals Singles crown last season, the 2015 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year finished just one set away from a repeat victory, and she will have one more opportunity to win the title as a senior in 2016.
