Day 2
Vogasari Wins before Rain Halts Texas Regionals
10/23/2015 12:00:00 AM | Tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rain was a major factor at the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals Friday, but that could not stop University of Houston Tennis junior Despoina Vogasari from advancing to the Singles Round of 16 in UH's lone match of the day.
After a six-hour delay at the beginning of the day, Vogasari faced off with TCU's Olaya Garrido-Rivas in the Round of 32. The defending Texas Regional Singles Champion was able to fight off another tough challenge, and she won the match, 7-5, 2-6, 10-6.
The No. 42-ranked singles player in all of collegiate tennis and the No. 3 seed at the Texas Regionals, Vogasari upped her career record to 61-18, and she boasts a 6-1 mark this season. The Athens, Greece, native is 8-0 all-time at the Texas Regionals, including her six victories in last season's title run.
With the win, Vogasari advanced to the Round of 16, where she was scheduled to face off with Rice's Solomiya Zinko. However, the rain returned before the match began, and it forced the cancellation of all of Friday's remaining contests.
Houston sophomore Mina Markovic did not take the court on Friday. Markovic was scheduled to face Lamar's Stephanie Marchena in the Singles Consolation 3rd Round, while she and Vogasari were slated to begin Doubles Consolation play. However, rain prevented the Belgrade, Serbia, native from seeing action.
