HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field teams will open the home portion of their 2014-15 indoor season with the 2015 Houston Indoor Opener at Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston on Friday.
Action will begin with the women's weight throw at 9 a.m., and will follow a rolling schedule of events throughout the day. The running events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with the prelims of the women's 60m hurdles.
Yeoman Fieldhouse will play host to nine teams from the state of Texas, including Stephen F. Austin, UTSA, Houston Baptist, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston State, and Lamar, as well as various club teams from around the area.
The Cougar men enter the 2015 portion of the indoor season fresh off of being named to the USTFCCCA Preseason top-25 poll for the first time in school history. Houston was awarded with the No. 18 spot in the poll, which is the highest ranking the Cougars have held since the poll began in 2008.
Sophomore Cameron Burrell and junior LeShon Collins return to help lead the Cougars, as the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 sprinters in the 60m dash respectively. Seniors Sade Mariah Greenidge and Dominique Brisco figure to be standouts on the women's side as each rank No. 25 in the nation in their respective events (60 meter hurdles and triple jump).
Burrell already owns the top time in the 60m dash, and the first weekly American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week award this season after posting a 6.66 in the season opener at the Reveille Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station. The Cougars claimed four individual titles in the first meet of the season and set 14 new personal bests.
The Indoor Opener will be the first of four meets held at home during the indoor season which includes the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational on Jan. 16, the Howie Ryan Invitational Jan. 30-31 and the Houston Tune Up on Feb. 13.
