ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 51 University of Houston tennis team got wins on the top two singles courts but could not overcome New Mexico in a 5-2 loss on Thursday evening. Houston is now 2-3 on the season.
No. 21 Despoina Vogasari and No. 52 Elena Kordolaimi were able to stay perfect in spring matches by taking the first two singles flights for Houston. Both players are now 4-0 individually in the spring, with Kordolaimi holding a seven-match winning streak that stretches back to the fall season.
The Lobos (4-1) started the match by winning the doubles point. Dominique Dulski and Natasha Smith were victorious on court one, 6-2, over Vogasari and Mina Markovic. UH evened the pairs battle on court three, with Maria Cardenas and Tina Rupert dominating Sharon Coone and Rachana Bhat, 6-1, but UNM took the point with a second court victory as Meredith Hopson and Emily Oliver won a tight battle over Kordolaimi and Rocio Martin, 7-6 (10-8).
The first two singles matches went to the home team. Dulski finished first with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Markovic on court four, and Coone secured court six with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rupert.
Houston battled back to win the second flight, with No. 52 Kordolaimi outlasting No. 75 Olivier, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. The win was the third of the season for Kordolaimi over a ranked opponent.
Unfortunately, New Mexico won the match soon after Kordolaimi got the Cougars on the board. The night was clinched on court three, where Hopson squeezed past Martin, 7-5, 6-4.
Though the Lobos were already assured of victory, No. 21 Vogasari was able to finish out a win in the top flight, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 over Smith. The final court to finish was No. 5, where Bhat defeated Charlotte Phillips, 5-7, 7-5, 2-1 (10-5).
