The Cougars (2-2) split a pair of matches last week at the ITA Weekend Kickoff in College Station. Patrick Sullivan's squad fell to No. 41 TCU on Jan. 24, 4-0, before coming back strong to knock off No. 70 North Texas, 4-2, one day later.
Sophomore Despoina Vogasari was named American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday after going unbeaten in College Station. The No. 21-ranked singles player in collegiate tennis, Vogasari is 14-3 overall and 3-0 in the spring this season.
Freshman Mina Markovic teamed with Vogasari to win her doubles match against North Texas, and she won her singles draw as well to score the clinching point against the Mean Green. Markovic has earned the decisive point in both of Houston's victories this season.
New Mexico (3-1) lost their most recent match, 5-2, on Jan. 25 against South Carolina. Sophomore Emily Olivier is ranked No. 75 nationally after making a run to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships in October.
The Cougars are 8-4 all-time against New Mexico, including a victory last season at the John E. Hoff Courts. UH won a thriller, 4-3, on Jan. 26, 2014. Vogasari, Tina Rupert, Maria Cardenas and Rocio Martin won singles matches after the Cougars dropped the doubles point.
Arizona has played just one spring season dual match, a 7-0 victory over New Mexico State on Jan. 24. The Wildcats host Northern Arizona one day before the Cougars visit Tucson.
Sophomore Lauren Marker is Arizona's top-ranked player, at No. 15 in the Southwest Region. The doubles tandem of Shayne Austin and Hanna Sohn is ranked eighth regionally.
Houston and Arizona have faced off just once before, a 5-2 Wildcat win on Feb. 9, 2008 in Tucson.
