PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Despoina Vogasari has been named American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced today. This is the first time Vogasari has been honored by The American during the 2015 spring season.
The Athens, Greece native was unbeaten last week as the Cougars competed at the ITA Weekend Kickoff in College Station. Neither of Vogasari's matches reached completion against No. 41 TCU on Jan. 24, though she was just one game from victory in both her No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles matches.
One day later, Vogasari earned two massive victories in a 4-2 win over No. 70 North Texas. On the top doubles court, she teamed with Mina Markovic for a 6-4 victory over Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer. At No. 1 singles, she rallied to beat Bardabush, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Vogasari was a three-time American Player of the Week as a freshman in 2014, when she was named Freshman of the Year, and she was twice named American Player of the Month during the 2014 fall season.
For the season, Vogasari is 14-3 in singles matches, including a 3-0 mark during the spring season.
