COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 35 University of Houston tennis team dug deep and outlasted No. 70 North Texas on Sunday afternoon, 4-2, in their final match of the ITA Weekend Kickoff. With the win, Houston improves to 2-2 overall.
Houston opened the day by winning two of three pairs matches to secure the point. They had to rally, however, as Sofia Cordero and Agustina Valenzuela of North Texas were the first to finish, with a 6-1 win over Maria Cardenas and Charlotte Phillips on court three.
But Houston stormed back to take the next two matches and the point. Mina Markovic and Despoina Vogasari won the top court, 6-4, over Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer. Elena Kordolaimi and Rocio Martin followed with a 6-3 victory on court two over Anastasiya Shestakova and Alexis Thoma.
The Mean Green (0-3) won the first completed singles court, as Valenzuela defeated Cardenas in the fifth flight, 6-0, 6-3. No. 21 Vogasari was the next to finish, besting Bardabush, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 on the top court. But North Texas evened the match a second time when Shestakova won the third court, 6-3, 6-2, over Martin.
The Cougars stayed the course and finished the day by winning the final two completed matches. No. 52 Kordolaimi gave Houston the lead with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over No. 113 Kamilla Galieva in the second flight, and Markovic clinched the win with a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Thoma.
Markovic, a freshman, has scored the clinching point for the Cougars in both of their victories this season.
Vogasari and Kordolaimi are now 3-0 in completed doubles matches. Dating back to the fall season, the senior has won six straight singles contests.
