HOUSTON - Sophomore Brian Barraza and Freshman Trumaine Jefferson have been named The American Athletic Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week after their performances at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational, the conference announced Tuesday.
Barraza clocked the NCAA's 24th fastest time in the mile this season when he crossed the finish line in 4:09.03 to win the event. The El Paso native was in action for just the first time in the 2014-15 indoor season after an impressive run to the NCAA National meet in the cross country season.
Jefferson needed just one leap in the long jump to set the standard for the field. The former Oak Ridge HS standout jumped 7.62m (25'0") on his first attempt as a collegiate athlete to eventually claim the event. For Jefferson, the 7.62m mark is the fourth best jump in the NCAA this season.
Houston has now won the American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week award in each of the three weeks of competition this season. Sophomore Cameron Burrell won the Track award after his performance in the 60m dash (6.66) at the Reveille Invitational on Dec. 13, while Issac Williams claimed the honor after the Houston Indoor Opener on Jan. 9 for his school-record setting time of 7.72 in the 60m hurdles.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars hit the road for their first away meet of 2015 when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the 2015 University of New Mexico Lobo Collegiate Open on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Indoor Track at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
