Houston Drops Tough 3-2 Decision at Mercer
9/7/2014 12:00:00 AM | Soccer
Houston used a pair of second-half goals to even the score at two before eventually conceding the go-ahead goal to the Bears. The Cougars took a season-high eight shots on goal and junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown collected six saves in the contest.
"Even with a two-hour delay, and a field that we should have never played on we fought hard," head coach Chris Pfau said. "It was ugly, and there were some ugly goals, but we never stopped, and we competed very hard."
Mercer got on the board early following the delay when Washida Blackman found the back of the net in the third minute. For Blackman the goal off a corner kick assist from Sarah Daane was her second goal of the season.
With just 35 seconds left in the first half, Mercer's Sydney Brogdon extended the Bears' lead heading into the locker room. Brogdon scored her third goal of the season unassisted to give Mercer a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Houston came out strong in the second half when Schulz knocked home a shot from the middle of the box that found the top of the net on an assist from Megan Goh, and the Cougars cut the score to 2-1.
In the 71st minute the score became tied when a Mercer player knocked the ball into the Bears' goal for an own-goal. However, Mercer regained the lead for good in the 72nd minute when Maddie Clark put in her second goal of the season.
Houston had a chance to tie the game late, when freshman Margo McEntire got in on goal with a minute to play, but Mercer goalkeeper Maggie Cropp was able to get the save and time expired.
