HOUSTON - Junior running back Kenneth Farrow became the seventh student-athlete from the Houston Football program to be placed on a national award's preseason watch list as the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday the preseason candidates for the 2014 Doak Walker Award.
With Farrow joining the fray, the Houston program has accounted for 11 national award watch list mentions this month.
Farrow is the fifth from the offensive side of the ball to be named to a national watch list joining junior wide receiver Deontay Greenberry (Biletnikoff Award, Maxwell Award), sophomore quarterback John O'Korn (Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award), senior center Bryce Redman (Rimington Trophy) and senior wide receiver Daniel Spencer (Biletnikoff Award).
On the defensive side of the ball, junior safety Trevon Stewart was named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list while senior linebacker Derrick Mathews has been named to three watch lists - the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, The Butkus Award and the Rotary Lombardi Award.
Houston's starting running back in 11 of 13 games, Farrow led the team with an average rush of 5.0 yards per carry. He finished 2013 with 514 rushing yards and six touchdowns off 103 carries while adding 24 receptions for 113 yards and one touchdown. A multi-purpose back, Farrow had multiple receptions in seven of his 10 games. The junior was named the program's Tom Wilson Weight Room Off-Season MVP at the 2013 Ken Baxter Football Banquet.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists on Nov. 18, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on Nov. 24. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on Dec.1 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2014 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas, Texas, in February 2015.
The award, in its 25th year, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
