HOUSTON - Houston Softball split Saturday's doubleheader with Rutgers falling 1-0 in the tenth inning before pulling away with a 7-2 win in the second game of the action. Houston is now 31-21 on the season and 12-8 in conference while Rutgers moves to 27-17 and 9-8 in the league.
RUTGERS 1, HOUSTON 0 (10) - Box Score
Houston and Rutgers played to a 10-inning pitcher's duel with a single run providing the difference as Rutgers won 1-0.
Two of the league's top offenses were stifled as starting pitchers Diedre Outon and Alyssa Landrith both turned in dominating performances inside the circle. Outon threw a UH school-record 10 innings to tie Angel Shamblin for the most innings thrown in a single game (10.0 IP, 2008) during the losing effort.
The two teams were held scoreless through the first seven innings combining for only seven total hits during regulation. A squeeze bunt by Rutgers' Carly Todd plated Jackie Bates and proved to be the difference that gave the Scarlet Knights the victory.
Two outstanding defensive plays late in the game kept the Cougars in the ballgame but UH was shutout for only the second time this season. Shortstop Selena Hernandez fielded a tough bouncer and threw the ball over to first base to get the third out of the sixth inning, and save a run from crossing the plate.
Centerfielder Katie St. Pierre helped keep it scoreless by reaching above the centerfield fence and taking away a home run in the top of the eighth inning.
UH is now 1-4 in extra inning games this season.
HOUSTON 7, RUTGERS 2 - Box Score
The Cougars went on top early thanks to a pair of home runs and never looked back winning 7-2 over Rutgers in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Leadoff batter Selena Hernandez started the inning with a solo shot before teammate Haley Outon hit her team-leading 13th long ball to make it 3-1 in favor of Houston in a hurry.
Hernandez added a two-out double to record her second RBI of the game the next time she stepped up to the plate. The sophomore ended up taking two bases on a wild pitch to cross the plate and extend Houston's lead to 5-1.
Houston used its bodies to add to the scoreboard in the fourth frame by taking a pair of bases-loaded, hit by pitches, and ran the score to 7-1. Hernandez drove in her third run of the game while reaching for the third-straight time by taking the first plunk, and Tiffani McKnight took one on the elbow to send another run home.
Summer Groholski tossed the win for UH throwing a complete game, five-strikeout performance to up her record to 7-5 on the season. Rutgers' Shayla Sweeney took the loss allowing all seven runs to fall to 9-9 on the season.
With the win, Houston ended its eight-game conference losing skid.

Houston and Rutgers conclude the regular season on Sunday at noon. Houston hosts the American Athletic Conference Championships May 8-10.
