HOUSTON - Houston Softball's Haley Outon was honored to the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-District squad for her outstanding work inside the classroom and on the field, the organization announced on Thursday.
Outon was named to the District 7 team and joined with 11 other student-athletes from the region to form the All-Academic squad. In order to be in consideration for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a 3.30+ cumulative GPA while playing in over 50 percent of the team's games.
With this honor, Outon is now eligible for the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.
The Health Promotions major carries a team-best 3.71 GPA while also dealing out an American Athletic Conference high of 13 home runs and 50 RBI. The top slugger in UH history, Outon holds the single season and career records in both stat categories.
The native of Pflugerville, Texas, has displayed a penchant for success on and off the diamond. Last year, Outon cleaned up in the awards department by being named the Softball Academic and Team MVP, the 2012-13 University of Houston Female Student-Athlete of the Year and the 2013 Conference USA Player of the Year.
This season Outon has dominated the batter's box while continuing to carve out her niche in NCAA softball history. The slugger currently has the fourth most home runs (56) and fifth-most RBIs (194) among all active student-athletes.
Outon joined with Elizabeth Arana, SFA; Jill Barrett, Tulsa; Kelli Baker, Texas State; Alyssa Coggins, Sam Houston State; Jessica Vest, Oklahoma; Allie Mathewson, Nebraska-Omaha; Ashley Nolan, Abilene Christian; Taylor Johnson, Incarnate Word; Whitney Canion, Baylor; Liz Paul, Baylor and Terah Blackwell, Idaho State to form the District 7 team.
