ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Houston Softball team fell 7-5 at UCF on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at the UCF Softball Complex. Houston moves to 29-19 on the year and 11-7 in conference wrapping up its final road conference tilt of the season with the Knights improving to 36-15 and 12-3.
The Cougars struck the scoreboard first scoring a run in the second inning on the first of two four-pitch walks handed to Haley Outon. The intentionally, unintentional walk put Outon on board and allowed the senior to score on the first of two RBI singles delivered by Jaime Edwards (3-for-3, 2 RBI) during the junior's first two at bats.
UCF answered with a solo home run by Samantha McCloskey, her second of the weekend, in the bottom half of the inning to make it even at 1-1 before Houston stretched its lead to 4-1 over the next two innings.
Tiffani McKnight hit her first career triple to drive in Katie St. Pierre and the junior from Missouri City, Texas, took home on an illegal pitch later in the inning to make it a 3-1 advantage for UH. Edwards connected on her second RBI single in the fourth inning to score Diedre Outon who had also reached on a triple.
The Knights pulled ahead 5-4 in the fourth inning with a big inning coming off five hits, three doubles and scoring four runs.
Houston answered in the sixth inning tying the game up at 5-5 when Edwards reached base with her third single of the game, tying her career high for the sixth time. The Austin, Texas native came around to score on a single hit softly over the shortstop's head by Katie St. Pierre. Edwards aggressively took the turn to home on the infield single and was had at the plate but the ball popped out of the catcher's glove after the tag and Edwards alertly touched the plate for the tying run.
Summer Groholski reentered the game in the sixth inning for UH and took the tough loss dropping her record to 5-5 on the year. Groholski threw the first three innings in her start holding UCF to a single run but was unable to keep the Knights from reaching the scoreboard in her relief appearance allowing two runs in the sixth.
UCF's Mackenzie Audas earned her second win of the weekend throwing a complete game to improve her record to 17-10 on the year.
