CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Houston Softball picked up the 9-4 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday afternoon in the program's final regular-season non-conference game of the year. With the win, Houston improves 30-19 on the year while the Islanders drop to 15-34 on the season.
After the Islanders went ahead in the bottom of the first, the Cougars tied the game up in the second inning when Kayla Holland lead off the inning reaching third via an error in right field. Haley Outon brought Holland to the plate on the next pitch delivering a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-1 game.
It was smooth sailing away from the Islanders at that point as Houston went up 4-1 their next turn at bat. All three runs in the third inning found their way home from Tiffani McKnight's triple. The junior's second triple in the past two games scored sophomores Selena Hernandez and Katie St. Pierre, who both reached on infield singles to start the rally. McKnight ended up scoring on the play after an errant throw directed towards third base went sailed past the bag.
Summer Groholski picked up the win inside the circle for Houston throwing the complete game to improve her record to 6-5 on the year. It was the fifth complete game of the year for the junior while A&M-Corpus Christi's Constance Bradenburg took the loss to drop to 1-14 on the season.
The Islanders gained a 1-0 lead in the first inning grabbing two hits and a double from Jasmise Jackson to put the home team ahead. Jackson again provided the big bat for the Islanders in the fourth inning hitting a two-run homer to make it a 4-3 lead for UH.
Haley Outon provided some insurance runs for the Cougars hitting her 13th home run of the year on a two-run shot in the fifth inning to make it a 6-3 lead. A pair of doubles by Jordan Rains and Jaime Edwards later in the inning led to a two-out rally and extended the Cougars advantage to 8-3.
St. Pierre contributed her third hit of the game to start the sixth and came around to score on Haley Outon's single and third RBI of the game to make it a 9-3 game.
