HOUSTON - Houston Softball split a pair of games with HBU on Wednesday evening at Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston moves to 29-15 on the season and the Huskies are now 17-24.
HOUSTON 2, HBU 1 - Box Score
Diedre Outon struck out the side to start the game and earned win to improve to 14-6 on the season. The senior threw first four innings and pitched the last out in relief to improve Houston's record to 29-15 on the year.
Houston went ahead in the first inning with Selena Hernandez singling through the right side. The sophomore came around to score her league-leading 41st run of the season after Tiffani McKnight's double two batters later.
Senior Kendra Cullum lead off the third inning with her third home run of the season to put Houston ahead 2-0.
After four scoreless innings pitched, Diedre turned the ball over to Julana Shrum who threw a pair of hitless relief. Junior Summer Groholski started the sixth and was chased out of the game after the Huskies rallied with four hits. Diedre came back in the game for Houston and pitched the final out with the bases load to help Houston to the win.
HBU 6, HOUSTON 5 (8) - Box Score
Houston fell to 1-3 in extra inning games this year after the Huskies took a 6-5 lead in the eighth inning to split the midweek series with the Cougars.
Houston scored the only two runs through the first five inning before the two teams combined for nine runs in during the last three with the Huskies scoring three, two and one run to pull away for the program's first win over UH in series history.
Jordan Rains went 3-for-4 in the game setting a career high for hits and started the two-run rally for Houston in the third inning. Rains led the inning off with a double before being thrown out on a force out at home. An error by HBU allowed one run to score before Haley Outon's single down the left field line added another run for 2-0 lead.
HBU went ahead 3-2 in the sixth ending Julana Shrum's evening after the sophomore threw 5.2 innings with three runs and nine hits allowed. Diedre Outon took over taking the loss throwing the last 2.1 innings and allowing three runs and four hits.
Diedre and Jaime Edwards hit back-to-back RBI singles to plate three runs and push Houston ahead by a one but HBU had an answer as the visitors scored the final three runs of the game to take the 6-5 win.
HBU's Alyssa Burnett singled and scored in the seventh and then hit a solo home run in the eighth to help the Huskies to the win.

Houston travels to UCF for a three-game set with the league-leading Knights this weekend.
