HOUSTON - Houston Softball fell 5-2 to USF on Saturday afternoon. The loss moves Houston to 28-15 on the year with the 11-4 American Athletic Conference with USF improving to 33-13 and 7-5 in the league.
The Cougars grabbed an early 1-0 lead coming their first at bat as Kendra Cullum reached first on her 85th career hit by pitch and the senior scored on classmate Haley Outon's single.
The Bulls charged ahead of the Red and White in the third inning with a two-run outing off the bat of Lee Anne's bases-clearing single to give USF a 2-1 lead. For the third straight game, USF's fourth-inning damage undid Houston's chances for the win as the Bulls pulled ahead 3-1.
Houston added its final run following Jaime Edwards' first career triple to start the fourth. Freshman Jordan Rains delivered a sacrifice fly to right field in the next at bat to make it 3-2 before USF added two runs in the seventh to claim the win.
Sophomore Julana Shrum (10-5) took the loss throwing a complete game allowing ten hits and throwing four strikeouts. USF's Sara Nevins picked up her third victory of the weekend (21-7) allowing eight hits and throwing eight strikeouts en route to becoming the program's all-time leader in career wins (93).
This weekend marks the first time since 2012 Houston has been swept by a conference opponent. UH had rattled off eight sweeps over their opponents dating back to the last time they were swept at UCF. Houston heads back to Orlando this weekend with a matchup between the first (UCF) and second (Houston) ranked teams in the league.
