BEAUMONT, Texas - Houston Softball earned a pair of wins on Wednesday over Lamar as the Cougars won 5-2 and 7-1 at Ford Park. Houston (28-12) remains a perfect 4-0 against the Lady Cardinals (19-17) having swept LU for the second-straight year in the non-conference match up.
HOUSTON 5, LAMAR 2 - Box Score
Houston took the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader 5-2 over Lamar. The Cougars took the lead thanks to the three-run rally in the fourth inning after Lamar jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first.
Starting pitcher Diedre Outon helped her own cause leading off the fourth frame with a double down the left field line. A fielder's choice from Jordan Rains sent Diedre home to tie the game up at 1-1. Sophomore Katie St. Pierre lifted a double over the left fielder's head later in the inning to score freshmen Hayley Chamberlain and Rains and give UH the 3-1 lead.
Diedre Outon (13-5) threw a complete game and matched her season high with six strikeouts to post her 13th win of the year. The 13 wins matches her total from last year tying a career high as she also added two runs scored on the day.
Lamar threatened with a late rally in the sixth putting the first two runners on base to start the frame. Jaime Edwards erased the lead runner throwing over to third from first for the first out and Diedre delivered the next out with her fifth strikeout of the game. A stolen base and then throwing error led to Lamar scoring one run with the tying run at third before the Cougars escaped the late jam.
UH gave themselves some breathing room during their final at bat the next inning scoring two more runs to extend the lead 5-2. Pinch hitter Kris Davila drove in the Outon sisters with a two-run pinch hit double to right center and delivered the final margin.
Houston totaled seven hits in the game and left nine runners on base as the team struggled to string together hits. All six of the first runners left on base in the first, second and fourth innings were stranded in scoring position.
HOUSTON 7, LAMAR 1 - Box Score
The Cougars cruised to a 7-1 win over Lamar and swept the doubleheader to remain unbeaten (4-0) vs. the Lady Cardinals.
Houston's starting pitcher Julana Shrum struggled to find the strike zone early on in the game as Lamar left eight runners on base over the first three innings. The lefty from Porum, Okla. settled down quickly afterwards and was unhittable the rest of the game. Shrum earned the win to improve to 10-4 on the year and retired 12 of the last 13 batters to clinch the victory for UH.
The Cougars opened the game up in the third inning with a four-score outing as part of the seven-run effort. Haley Outon's three-run homer highlighted the scoring efforts as the senior brought home Tiffani McKnight and Selena Hernandez, who reached on her team-leading 13th double of the season. Diedre Outon took first on a single and came around to score on Katie St. Pierre's triple in the inning.
The third inning for Houston this year has been by far its most productive scoring 63 runs to their opponents' total of 22.
Houston entered the game with just two triples on the year and matched their season total after St. Pierre's hit. Haley Outon hit her fourth career triple in the first inning to score Hernandez and get UH on the scoreboard first. The senior catcher ended up scoring on the play as the throw to third went askew and Outon walked into home.
Lamar tallied a program-high five errors with Houston's final score coming courtesy of the miscues. Kendra Cullum knocked a double to left to move Selena Hernandez to third and the Cougar shortstop scored off Haley Outon's misplayed ball to give Houston it's 7-1 win.
UP NEXT
