MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Houston Softball fell 6-5 to Memphis during the Tigers final at bat as the Cougars dropped their first American Athletic Conference game. Houston took two of three games from Memphis (18-24 | 3-8) to take the series and moves to 26-11 on the year and 11-1 in league play.
The two teams traded the lead six times during the back-and-forth game with the Tigers delivering the winning run on a UH error. The first four innings saw the pair of teams score nine runs combined before settling into a pair of scoreless frames. Both teams scored in the final inning as the Cougars ended their nine-game winning streak over Memphis.
Houston struck in the first inning when leadoff batter Selena Hernandez drew a walk to start the game. A single from Kendra Cullum and walk to Tiffani McKnight allowed Hernandez to move to third and take home on a passed ball.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the second with Georganna Goodwin's three-run homer to put the home team ahead 3-1.
Houston tied the game back up with a homerun of their own during its next turn at bat. McKnight (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 1 R) hit a homer for the second game in a row to plate herself and Cullum to make it a 3-3 ball game.
UH held a 4-3 advantage following the next inning of play but Memphis scored two their own to cling to a 5-4 advantage heading into the final inning.
Houston's seventh-inning rally started with two outs when Katie St. Pierre reached on an error. A walk put Hernandez on board and Cullum was plunked for the second time of the game to load the bases for McKnight. The Missouri City, Texas native delivered the tying run with an infield single up the middle to make it a 5-5 game. Houston was poised to add on to its advantage but Haley Outon's hard-hit liner to left field was snared by Memphis and the Tigers scored a run in the seventh to take the 6-5 win.
The Cougars used all three pitchers with Summer Groholski taking the loss falling to 5-3 on the season.
