HOUSTON - All three of the University of Houston divers will compete at the 2014 Zone D Diving Championships hosted at the University of Minnesota from March 10-12. To qualify for the NCAA Championships, also hosted at the University of Minnesota (March 20-22), the divers must score a minimum qualification point total in at least one of the three diving events. Nine divers from the Zone D area will receive bids to the Championships.
The meet begins Monday at 11 a.m. with the 1M followed by the 3M on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and concluding with the Platform on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
The three Houston student-athletes will compete with approximately 90 other competitors from 27 schools across the central region. The teams include host Minnesota, Arkansas-Fayetteville, Arkansas - Little Rock, Centenary College (Louisiana), Houston, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, LSU, Minnesota, Missouri State, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, North Texas, Northern Iowa, Saint Louis. This is the third Zone Championships for junior Natasha Burgess who is looking to punch her ticket to the NCAA Championships for the first time after narrowly missing out the past two tries. Sophomore Danielle Shedd will compete at her second Zones while this is the first time for freshman Taylor Olanski.
Houston enters the Zone Diving meet fresh off a successful appearance at the American Championships where Burgess was named the Most Outstanding Diver after capturing the 3M crown and taking runner up. Olanski took first in the platform and third in the 3M while Shedd earned runner-up honors in the 1M. All three were named to the All-Conference team. Interim diving coach guided the three Cougars to the most dominant performance among the conference schools and was named the Diving Coach of the Year.
