UNCASVILLE, Conn.--- The Cougars give it their best shot Saturday night, but in the end Louisville showed why its considered one of the best teams in the country, as it defeated Houston, 88-43 in the quarterfinals of the inaugural American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Sophomore guard Jessieka Palmer recorded her sixth double figure scoring game of the season, as she led the Cougars with 13 points, while connecting on 6-of-7 free throw attempts.
Senior forward Destini Texada also stepped up in her final game as a Houston Cougar, as she pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in 27 minutes of action.
Senior center Yasmeen Thompson also chipped in with five points and seven rebounds for Houston.
The Cardinals boasted four players in double figures, with senior guard Shoni Schimmel leading the way with 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting, while Antonita Slaughter also chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Louisville (29-3) jumped up 7-0 before Thompson put in a bucket to get the Cougars on the board, as they trailed 7-2 with 17:03 left in the first half.
The Cardinals continued to execute offensively, as they launched a 23-4 run over the next seven-plus minutes to take a commanding 30-6 lead with 9:07 remaining in the half.
Houston (6-25) did everything it could defensively, but the Louisville offense was just too tough Saturday night, as it shot 17-of-33 from the field in the first half for 51.5 percent, eventually taking a 46-19 lead into halftime.
While it wasn't the Cougars' night, they never gave up, as they took what was at one point a 48 point lead, and trimmed it down 82-40 with 3:15 remaining, thanks to a 6-0 scoring run.
The Cougars received double digit scoring from their bench for the 22nd time this season, as 10 different players saw playing time on the night.
Houston finishes up the 2014 American Athletic Conference Tournament with a record of 1-1, after it upset seventh-seeded Memphis, 73-67 the opening round on Friday night.
