HOUSTON - Houston Softball enjoyed its second-straight walk-off win (6-5) and a 4-0 shutout over Louisville (20-13 | 2-3) on Saturday. The Cougars improved to 18-10 on the season and 5-0 in American Athletic Conference with the two teams closing out the series Sunday at noon.
GAME 1 - HOUSTON (17-10 | 4-0) 6, LOUISVILLE (20-12 | 2-2) 5
Houston's walk-off win came in similar fashion to the 7-6 win over Temple on Sunday as bases-loaded free pass gave the Cougars the victory.
Freshman Jordan Rains delivered her first career game-winning RBI as she took a hit by the pitch to plate classmate Hayley Chamberlain in the seventh inning. Chamberlain entered the game as a pinch runner for Jaime Edwards who reached safely on a fielder's choice. A single by Kayla Holland and a catcher's interference to Diedre Outon set the stage for Rains who hit her second career RBI in as many games.
Houston needed to mount the comeback effort after the Cardinals (20-12 | 2-2) tied the game at 5-5 with two home runs as part of a three-run rally in the top of the seventh.
The majority of the damage dealt by the UH offense in the first game came from the bat of Haley Outon. The senior totaled five RBIs in the game with four coming from her fourth career grand slam.
The fifth-inning home run from Outon scored Selena Hernandez (2-for-3. 1R), Kendra Cullum (1-for-4, 2R) and Tiffani McKnight (2-for-4, 1R) and regained the lead 5-2 in favor of Houston.
Houston's starting pitcher Diedre Outon retired eight of the first nine batters on her way to her eighth win of the season (8-5) and third in conference play. She allowed seven hits throwing a strikeout and a walk.
Louisville's Maryssa Becker took her second loss (8-2) of the season as the Cardinals fell to 20-12 and 2-2 on the year.
GAME 2 - HOUSTON (18-10 | 5-0) 4, LOUISVILLE (20-13 | 2-3) 0
Sophomore Julana Shrum threw a three-hit shutout against Louisville during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader and Houston won its fifth-straight conference game to open up the season.
All four of Houston's runs came in the third inning as the Cougars posted their third conference shutout of the season.
Katie St. Pierre led off the third by drawing a walk and later scored on Kendra Cullum's (3-for-4, 1 RBI) single. Tiffani McKnight provided another one-base hit next to score Selena Hernandez before the Outon twins both reached safely on free passes as Haley was hit by a pitch and Diedre walked.
A wild pitch allowed from Louisville's Caralisa Connell (7-5) scored Haley before U of L turned to Rachel Le Coq to finigh the game. Kayla Holland touched up Coq for a third RBI single of the inning and provide the 4-0 cushion for the Houston victory.
