Houston Holds First Spring Scrimmage

HOUSTON - The Houston Football program held its first scrimmage of 2014 Saturday morning at the Houston Football Practice Facility. The hour-long scrimmage consisted of a variety of down-and-distance situations from a number of points on the field.

Sophomore Tyler McCloskey led the Cougars in rushing with nine carries for 88 yards while his classmate, John O'Korn, was 18-of-25 passing for 130 yards and two touchdowns. A third sophomore, Greg Ward Jr., led the way receiving with five receptions for 19 yards and one touchdown while senior Daniel Spencer had a 10-yard scoring strike as well.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker D'Juan Hines led the way with six tackles while Tyler White had the day's lone interception to go along with four tackles. Junior Elandon Roberts and senior Kent London finished with fumble recoveries for the Houston defense, which led the nation in turnovers forced in 2013 with 43.

With Richie Leone graduating from Houston, the punt position is up for grabs for the first time in four years and junior Dylan Seibert put his best foot forward Saturday with four punts for an average of 47.0 yards.

Houston returns to practice on Monday, March 24, and has three practices open to the public next week with open workouts from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday and an open scrimmage from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday. All workouts are held at the Houston Football Practice Facility located behind the Athletics/Alumni Center at 3100 Cullen Blvd.
