Cougars Open Pearland Invitational with Great Success

PEARLAND, Texas - The University of Houston swimming team finished the opening day of the Pearland Invitational with seven top-ten finishes on Friday evening at the Pearland Recreation Center.

The Cougars had four top-five finishes on the first day of the three-day long competition. In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Rachel Hobbins finished fourth with a time of 4:58.85. Michaela Hamrick also earned a top-10 finish in the event, placing seventh with a time of 5:03.52.
Earlier, in the prelims, Hamrick had set a personal best with a time of 5:00.18.
Junior Dora Bednjanec took fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.73. The time was a season best.
Houston's relay teams also had a terrific performance on the first day of the competition. The Cougar 200-yard freestyle team (Bednjanec, Gregory, Horner and Hamrick) took fourth in their race with a time of 1:35.55. In the 400-yard medley relay the Cougar team of Bednjanec, Balkom, Criscuolo and Owens placed fifth with a time of 3:55.39, while the team of Gregory, Derevyanik, Williams and Moore placed sixth with a mark of 3:56.19.
"We had really good energy and support from team today, and I am happy with how we raced," said head coach Rich Murphy. "Our relay teams were especially strong and several student-athletes set personal bests. Overall it was a very successful day."
The Cougars set 21 season bests as a team, with 10 lifetime-best performances during the finals tonight.
UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS
Houston returns to the pool tomorrow morning for day two of the Pearland Invitational. The preliminary round starts at 10:30 am, with finals starting at 5:30 pm.
