HOUSTON - After a hard fought battle, the University of Houston volleyball team pulled out a 3-2 victory (25-19, 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 16-14) against neighboring school Texas Southern Tuesday evening at the Health & Physical Education Building.
Both teams came into the match 2-1 for the season. The Cougars improves to 3-1 heading into the weekend tournament while the Tigers falls to 2-2.
Houston went set-for-set with TSU, both committing errors throughout. Houston had 27 attacking errors while the Tigers recorded one less (26). However, the Cougars had 18 total blocks compared to TSU's seven.
Three Cougars had double figures in kills against TSU. Freshman Sarita Mikals led the Cougars recording her first collegiate double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs. Junior Cortney Warren hit 22 kills in 53 attempts (.264) While Kadi Kullerkann had a stellar performance recording a .294 hitting percentage (21-7-38).
Setter Sophie Paine had a career high of 57 assists. The last time a Cougar had more than 50 assists was Abby Simmons (56) against Appalachian State Aug. 31, 2012.

Houston Volleyball travels across state lines this weekend for the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic in Lafayette, La. On Friday, the Cougars face Alcorn State at 4 p.m. Houston then plays two matches Saturday against Nicholls State at 10 a.m. and host team Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m.
