HOUSTON - For his efforts both on and off the court, University of Houston Men's Basketball sophomore forward Mikhail McLean received the Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced Tuesday morning.
McLean was one of 12 student-athletes from around the league to receive Tuesday's honor.
A member of the Men's Basketball team for the last three years, McLean competed in 26 games with 11 starts in 2012-13. He scored a career-high 12 points in the team's dominating win against C-USA rival Marshall and grabbed a personal-best nine rebounds in a road win at Big 12 member TCU.
He helped lead the Cougars to a 20-13 record in 2012-13, the first 20-win season for Houston since 2008-09, and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational quarterfinals.
Off the court, McLean is scheduled to graduate this summer with a major in health and a minor in Human and Developmental Consumer Science and Merchandising. Earning his bachelor's degree in just more than three years, McLean will attend graduate school this fall and was a member of the 2010-11 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Earlier in the fall, he helped the members of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church unload nearly 2,400 pumpkins, which weighed nearly 44,000 pounds. On Thanksgiving afternoon, he served lunches to Star of Hope Mission residents, an act he has done during each of the last three years.
Prior to the Conference USA Championship at Tulsa in mid-March, McLean spoke to students from Emerson Elementary School about the importance of working hard in school, reading and being good citizens.
