OPELIKA, Ala. - The University of Houston golf team played steady golf throughout the final day to move up two places and tie for fifth place at the Tiger Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
Rain forced the postponement of second-round play, so teams played 36 holes beginning Tuesday morning. After shooting a team score of 299 in the morning session, Houston totaled a tally of 301 in the afternoon round to tie with Kentucky and No. 42 Chattanooga for fifth place at 901.
It was the first time in seven events during the 2012-13 season that the Cougars did not place among the top-seven team leaders
No. 41 Mississippi State won the team title with a score of 889 to finish seven strokes ahead of Memphis. Host and 21st-ranked Auburn finished third at 899, while South Alabama placed fourth with a score of 900.
Junior Curtis Reed finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a score of 225 to tie for 17th and lead the Cougars in the second straight tournament.
Junior Wesley McClain fired the team's lowest final round with a score of 73 to tie for 25th at 227. Sophomore Kyle Pilgrim started the day with a 72 in the morning round and tied with McClain at 227.
Other Cougars in action were sophomore Roman Robledo (t-30th, 228) and freshman Vincent Martino (t-65th, 237).
