When Houston receiver Shane Ros tore his ACL last spring, he knew he wouldn't be able to play this fall. That didn't change Ros' influence with the team, however, as he remains a constant presence around practice and Houston games, home and away. While he's around the program, Ros will provide an inside look and player's perspective of the program to UHCougars.com.
It was a foggy Halloween night at Reliant Stadium as the Houston Cougars took on the USF Bulls. Football fright night was the theme and it fit the billing as the boys from Tampa gave the Cougars quite a scare.
Wearing all black uniforms for the first time in school history, the Houston Cougars looked sharp for its primetime performance on ESPN. Riding a wave of adrenaline that came with the new duds, the Third Ward Defense got off to a great start holding the Bulls to a three-and-out on their first possession. Then it was the offense's turn. Once "The Show" got the ball they wasted no time putting it in the end zone as they quickly marched down the field and put seven on the board. The fast start was just what the doctor ordered and the Cougars seemed to be in control early. However as all good teams do, the Bulls fought back. Every time the Cougars looked like they were pulling away the resilient Bulls found a way to stick around.
Late in the second half the Cougars found themselves in a five-point ballgame with the Bulls driving for the go-ahead score. As they have done all season the defense rose to the occasion. When USF freshman quarterback Mike White dropped back to pass he was strip sacked by the relentless Cougar D. With the ball on the ground, the home team recovered, adding yet another turnover to their nation-leading total.
With a chance to ice the game, the offense did just that. After converting a critical third down the Cougars burned the clock on the way to a game-sealing score. In the end the Cougars came away with a gut wrenching 35-23 win to improve their record to 7-1.
Next up for the Cougars is a big time matchup with fellow undefeated American Athletic Conference member UCF. The Golden Knights are familiar foes, having spent several years playing the Cougars in Conference USA. With a chance to gain sole possession of first place on the line, the Cougars approach remains the same. The outcome of this game will rely on a great week of preparation on the practice field just as it has all season. Then on Friday it will be wheels up to Orlando as the Cougars seek to improve their record to 1-0.
Go Coogs!
