HOUSTON - Tulsa used an 11-2 run to start the second half and broke open a close game on the way to an 87-72 win against the University of Houston Men's Basketball team on Wednesday night inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars trailed 37-23 late in the first half but closed out the opening period on a 9-3 run to move to within 40-32 at the break.
The game started well for Houston in the second half as sophomore forward TaShawn Thomas converted a layup on the opening possession. However, that would be as close as Houston would come the rest of the way.
Tulsa forward Scottie Haralson drained a layup to start the Golden Hurricane's run and then nailed three consecutive 3-pointers followed by three straight Houston misses for a 51-34 lead with 17:22 remaining in the game. The Cougars would move no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Thomas posted 12 points with a game-high 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double and his eighth of the season. It also marked the Killeen, Texas, native's 17th double-double in his career.
Sophomore guard Joseph Young led the Cougars with 16 points and a pair of 3-pointers, while freshman forward Danuel House added 15 points with five boards.
Haralson led five Golden Hurricane players in double digits with 19 points and seven rebounds and added a game-high five 3-pointers, all in the second half. Tim Peete and James Woodard posted 14 points apiece, while Pat Swilling Jr. came off the bench to score 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Kauri Black added 10 points in the win.
NOTES
• Tulsa moved to 22-21 in the all-time series... Tulsa has won the last two games... Cougars fell to 13-8 all-time against Tulsa in Houston. • Thomas started his 48th consecutive games, every game of his collegiate career.
