NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Houston volleyball team struggled to gain momentum throughout the match, falling 3-0, to Missouri on Friday morning in the opening match of the Lipscomb Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
The Cougars dropped to 0-4 on the year and were swept, 3-0, in their third straight match, which dates back to last weekend at Ohio State's tournament.
On the match, Houston tallied just 32 kills, led by seniors Katie Norris (12), Stephanie Nwachukwu (6) and Chandace Tryon (6). Senior setter Abby Simmons paced the offense with 26 assists. Defensively, Houston sophomore libero Natalie Keck recorded 11 digs, while Simmons, freshman Emily Howard and Tryon all combined for nine block assists with three each.
Missouri out hit Houston with 46 kills, led by Lisa Hening's 17 kills. Jade Hayes paced the defense with 12 digs.
MISSOURI 3, HOUSTON 0
SET 1 - Missouri 25, Houston 18
Houston went up 3-1 after three early kills by Norris and Waters. However, Missouri found a way to tie and eventually take the lead for good at 6-5 after a few Cougar miscues. The Tigers strung together five unanswered points to take a 10-5 lead, but Houston brought it within three at 12-9 following kills from Norris and Howard. Missouri broke the game open with five of the next six points recorded for a 22-15 lead. Attackers Norris, Tryon and Howard kept Houston alive late as Missouri was looking to close in on the first-set win. A final kill by the Tigers sealed the early advantage at 25-18.
SET 2 - Missouri 25, Houston 23
Missouri grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but Houston got on board with two straight points with kills from Norris and a Missouri attack error. Both teams battled each other with four straight kills before the Cougars took the lead at 7-6 after a Tiger error. Houston's Nwachukwu had back-to-back kills for the Cougars. Exchanging the leads for the first half of the second set, Houston and Missouri were tied as late as 16-16, but back-to-back errors by the Cougars have Missouri a two-point advantage. Tigers' Regan Pelitier used three straight kills to put Missouri up 21-18 before Tryon ended the short run with a kill of her own. Missouri held the set point, but Houston used two attack errors and a Tryon service ace to make it a 24-23 game. The Tigers went on to end set two with a final kill.
SET 3 - Missouri 25, Houston 15
Houston was down by just one point until three straight Cougar errors gave Missouri an 8-4 lead. The Tigers went on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 13-5. They then extended the lead to 18-8, which included a Tyron kill for Houston's only point in six score changes. Norris and Simmons had back-to-back points for Houston to narrow the deficit to nine at 19-10, but Missouri was able to break the set open even more. With set point on the line for Missouri, Houston responded with consecutive points in the late going on Tiger errors, but a Missouri kill ended the run.

UP NEXT
Houston will continue play at the Lipscomb Invitational at 5 p.m. today against Appalachian State. The Cougars will then wrap up the weekend tournament on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against host-Lipscomb.
