HOUSTON- The University of Houston soccer program will split opening weekend with road and home matches. The Cougars will face Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m., Friday in Nacogdoches, Texas, followed by hosting Houston Baptist at 7 p.m., Sunday at Robertson Stadium.
Houston opened the 2012 schedule with a 2-1 win in an exhibition game against Northwestern State on Saturday. The Cougars rallied back from 1-0 deficit at the half when an own goal was scored and senior forward Katelyn Rhodes provided the game-winning goal in the 80th minute with a high-flying ball over the goalkeepers head.
"We did really well with only eight days of training," Head Coach Chris Pfau said. "Throughout the game you could see flashes of things we have been working on, but most of all you could see the comprehension. That is all you can ask for when installing a new system and having only a few days to work on things."
The Cougars welcomed back 15 letterwinners and seven starters from the 2011 season. Joining the veterans will be nine newcomers, including six freshmen and three transfers.
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
The Ladyjacks opened their 2012 campaign with an 11-0 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday. SFA outshot the Panthers 36-3 in the exhibition game. Sophomore forward Zuri Prince had four goals, while senior forward Laura Sadler and sophomore forward Chelsea Raymond each scored two goals.
Friday marks the season opener for both teams and the first time these two have met to open the season. The Cougars are 4-3 all time against SFA and are 1-1 at the SFA Soccer Complex. In the last meeting in 2006, the Ladyjacks won 4-1.
