Mike Stoerkel Named Houston Assistant Soccer Coach

HOUSTON - Mike Stoerkel has joined the University of Houston soccer program as an assistant coach with his hiring Wednesday, head coach Chris Pfau announced.
"We look forward to adding Mike to our staff," Pfau said. "Mike has a great energy and the ability to connect with the players. He will help Houston soccer build a winning culture."
Stoerkel, which is pronounced Stork-el, joins Houston after spending one season with Ohio University.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity Coach Pfau and the entire Cougar family has given me," Stoerkel said. "There are tons of great things happening at Houston not only within the soccer program and athletic department, but the entire university. I am privileged to be able to be a part of it. I look forward to working with Coach Pfau and Coach Grech to make Houston a national soccer power."
Prior to Ohio, Stoerkel served as the soccer administrator at Pinnacle Sports in Medina, Ohio. In his role, he coordinated scheduling for over 200 teams, organized and directed coaches for over 3,000 players annually, developed curriculum, and implemented training programs for children between the ages of 3-18.
Stoerkel was also the owner, founder and director of the High School Development Program Soccer Club in Akron, Ohio.
As a prep, Stoerkel was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) High School All-American and the Ohio High School Division II Player of the Year in 2000. He also played in U16 U.S. National Pool Team.
Stoerkel, who played soccer at Ashland University from 2001-05, received his bachelor's degree in sports communication from Ashland University in 2005 and his master's in coaching education from Ohio University in 2012. He is a member of the Ohio Youth Soccer Association North Olympic Development Program State coaching staff and has served on the Region 2 ODP coaching staff since 2009. Stoerkel also holds an NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma and a number of coaching licenses including a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "A."
