COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - The University of Houston softball team dropped the final game of the Texas A&M Invitational to the host Aggies 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
Houston had the initial advantage over Texas A&M as Holly Anderson delivered a two-out two RBI single in the fourth inning. Anderson's single scored Reina Gaber and Jaime Edwards who reached base via a walk and single, respectively. Haley Outon followed the 2-3 hole hitters with a bunt single to load the bases for Anderson but was stranded as the Cougars pushed two runs home to take a 2-0 lead in the inning.
"Any time you score first against a ranked opponent like Texas A&M, you hope that will be enough to be able to pull a win out," said head coach Kyla Holas.
Diedre Outon (3-2) received the loss as she went six innings and allowed six hits. The sophomore was cruising along until a solo home run in the fifth inning helped swing the tide for the home squad.
"We gave up a home run on a 1-2 count that gave them momentum. We still had a key defensive error at the wrong time that is giving teams more chances and runners than we would like. I'm glad to be heading home after being on the road for a while and hopefully we can use the rest to focus on some things to shore up."
In the sixth inning, Houston's lone error allowed a runner to advance to second on a single and A&M capitalized as four of the next five batters reached base on a hit or walk. A&M took the 3-2 lead from Houston as they scored two runs in the sixth.
The Cougars went 1-4 in the tournament with their lone win coming against Texas A&M which ended the nation's longest home winning streak (34). The Aggies and Texas State both went 4-1 but by virtue of A&M's win over Texas State the Aggies claimed the tournament title. Nebraska also posted a 1-4 record over the weekend.
