HOUSTON - The University of Houston Cougars battled No. 11 Louisiana before falling 12-7 in a nine-inning contest. The Cougars (10-1) hit three home runs but gave up the same number to UL, including two grand slams as the Ragin' Cajuns (18-0) remained undefeated to begin the year.
With heavy winds blowing straight out of Cougar Softball Stadium, both pitchers struggled keeping the balls in the park as the two teams battled back and forth. The teams combined to hit six home runs and 18 of the 19 runs scored were delivered courtesy of the long ball.
The Cougars got on the board first when Jamie Edwards hit her third home run of the year to put Houston up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Haley Outon drove in her team-leading fifth long ball of the year to give Houston the 4-0 advantage in the third inning.
Ty'ara Law started the game for Houston but ran into a jam in the second inning after hitting a batter and allowing two singles to load the bases. Diedre Outon came in relief for the freshman and with the bases loaded, induced three straight ground outs for the Cougars to get out of the inning unscathed.
Louisiana cut into the Cougars lead with a three-run homer in the fifth inning. After getting the first two outs, Outon gave up a three-run homer. Summer Groholski struck out the next batter to close out the frame for Houston.
Louisiana would add four runs in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead.
Houston head coach Kyla Holas called on redshirt freshman Sydney Gerbracht to pinch hit in the bottom of the inning and the San Diego, Calif., native delivered a three-run homer to tie the game at 7-7. It was the second time this year Gerbracht has delivered a home run in a pinch hitting opportunity.
The Ragin' Cajuns would score five runs, including their second grand slam of the game, in the ninth inning to take the 12-7 win.
