TULSA, Okla. - The University of Houston men's basketball team returns to action this weekend when it meets Conference USA-rival Tulsa at 7 p.m., Saturday, inside the Reynolds Center.
The Cougars will be looking for the regular-season sweep of the Golden Hurricane. Houston rallied from four points down in the final minute of overtime to take a 70-69 win against Tulsa on Jan. 4 inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston enters this weekend's game on the heels of a tough 79-71 loss to crosstown-rival Rice on Wednesday. Against the Owls, junior guard Jonathon Simmons finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. In addition to leading or tying for the team lead in scoring for the 10th time this season, the Houston native also recorded the first double-double of his career.
Simmons, a product of Smiley High, became the fourth Cougar to record a double-double this season, joining sophomore forward Alandise Harris, junior forward Kirk Van Slyke and freshman forward TaShawn Thomas.
In addition to Simmons, redshirt freshman guard Joseph Young scored 13 points against the Owls, thanks to three 3-pointers, and Harris fell just a rebound shy of recording his own double-double with 13 points and nine boards.
This season, Simmons leads the Cougars and ranks ninth in the league with 14.8 points per contest. Harris stands second on the squad with 13.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while Thomas leads the Cougars and ranks seventh in the league with 8.0 rebounds per contest.
