TULSA, Okla. - The University of Houston women's basketball team returns to action to face Conference USA foe Tulsa at 2 p.m., Sunday at Reynolds Center.
The Cougars are coming off of a 63-50 loss to SMU on Thursday at Hofheinz Pavilion, as a late scoring drought sunk Houston's hopes of a comeback.
Houston's defense has vastly improved over the last two contests, holding its opponents to an average of 60.5 points while limiting the opposition to a 31-percent (39-of-126) shooting effort.
Senior guard Roxana Button made history in Thursday's contest, draining a 3-pointer at the 6:37 mark of the first half to surpass the 1,000-point mark, becoming the 22nd member of the elite club. Button continues to lead the league in scoring with 17.5 points per game while stretching her consecutive games played streak to 113 contests.
Amanda Lawson led the Cougars with 14 points on Thursday to improve her average to 9.1 points per game this season, which leads all freshmen in C-USA, while fellow newcomer Terran Alford grabbed 10 rebounds in 23 minutes to increase her season rebound mark to 6.5 per game, which is also tops among freshmen.
ABOUT TULSA
Tulsa has dropped three of its last four contests entering Sunday's game for a 9-11 overall mark and a 4-5 record in C-USA play.
The Golden Hurricane average 59.2 points per contest, but have only managed 45.3 points over the past four games. Tulsa has allowed 58.9 points per game while forcing 18.9 turnovers and snagging 9.5 steals per contest. The Golden Hurricane have also grabbed 41.7 boards per game to win the rebound battle by a plus-4.0 margin.
Junior guard Taleya Mayberry leads Tulsa with 14.1 points and 3.2 assists per game while sophomore guard Taylor Hooker is also scoring in double figures with 10.2 points per contest. Tiffani Couisnard, Chanice Scott and Loren McDaniel have combined for 20.1 points and 17.2 rebounds in the post.
SERIES HISTORY VS. TULSA
Houston and Tulsa meet for the 14th time in the series that began during the 2005-06 season when the Golden Hurricane joined Conference USA. Tulsa claimed a 77-49 victory over the Cougars on Jan. 19 to break a deadlock in the series history for a 7-6 advantage.
The Cougars were plagued by a slow start against Tulsa in the first meeting this season, falling behind by a score of 33-11 at the 7:42 mark. Houston stormed back with a 15-0 run, but Tulsa broke a nearly eight minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer at the buzzer and would never look back.
BUTTON JOIN'S HOUSTON'S 1,000-POINT CLUB
Entering the 2011-12 season, few would have thought that senior guard Roxana Button would get the opportunity to become the school's 22nd member of the 1,000-point club, but with the loss of six seniors from a year ago and a rash of injuries, Button has been depended on to create offense and has lit up the scoreboard to the tune of 17.5 points per game through 20 games this season.
Button etched her name in the UH record book against SMU on Thursday, draining a 3-pointer to surpass the 1,000-point mark.
Button entered the season with 653 points at an average of 7.0 points per game, and has already tallied 350 points for a career total of 1,003. Button opened the season scoring in double figures in 16-straight games, surpassing her previous career high of four-straight double-digit performances.
The Coppell, Texas, native joined the school's 30-point club against Yale on Nov. 25, and matched her career high with 30 points at UTSA on Dec. 4. Button leads the league in scoring (17.5 ppg), 30-point performances (2) and 20-point games (10) after entering the season having scored 20 or more points only once in her career.
