Women's Tennis Rolls Past Sam Houston State, 5-1

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team continued its dominant play on Saturday afternoon, cruising past Sam Houston State by a score of 5-1 at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club. The Cougars claimed their fourth-straight win to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Houston has outscored its opponents by a 23-4 margin during the current four-match winning streak.
"We continued our dominant play indoors," head coach John Severance said. "I'm proud of the way we've responded lately and we're playing good tennis right now."
Senior Giorgia Pozzan opened the contest with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Imke Jagau at the top position for her fifth-straight win to improve to 5-1 this season.
Junior Bryony Hunter followed, defeating Sheridan Currie at the No. 2 position by a score of 6-3, 6-3 to put Houston on top 2-0.
Sophomore Celia Fraser continued her strong play of late, downing Natalie Petaia by a score of 6-1, 6-4 to claim her fourth-straight win and improve to 4-2 this spring.
After a Houston loss at the No. 4 spot, junior Maja Kazimieruk routed Kayla Stevenson, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 6 position to clinch the match for the Cougars and freshman Charlotte Phillips rounded out the action with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over Nadia Dubyanskaya.
Houston will take its winning streak to Hammond, La., on Feb. 24 to take on Southeastern Louisiana.
