HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team continues its road swing at 6 p.m. (CST) Thursday at East Carolina inside Minges Coliseum.
Houston fell to Memphis in their last action on Sunday as an extended scoring drought plagued the Cougars down the stretch.
The Cougars held the league's top offense to just 28 percent in the opening 20 minutes and trailed by only nine points early in the second half when the Tigers used a 17-0 run to put the contest out of reach.
Senior guard Roxana Button scored in double figures for the 20th time this season and the 50th time of her career with 14 points to lead the Cougars. Button continues to lead C-USA in scoring with 17.3 points per game and looks to compete in her 117th-consecutive contest on Thursday, which ranks as the fifth-longest streak in Houston history.
A pair of freshmen continue to lead all newcomers in the league, as Amanda Lawson is averaging 9.2 points per game and Terran Alford is grabbing 6.1 rebounds per contest. Lawson has scored in double figures in eight of 11 league games while Alford has shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field in the last five contests.
ABOUT EAST CAROLINA
East Carolina snapped a 10-game losing streak in its last action, defeating Marshall to improve to 7-17 overall and 1-10 in C-USA play.
The Pirates have only averaged close to 57 points per game this season but the defense has limited the opposition to just 58.3 points per contest. ECU ranks third in the league in steals per game (10.9) and has forced almost 21 turnovers per contest.
Junior guard Shala Hodges and senior forward Chareya Smith are scoring in double figures for the Pirates with 10.6 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. Graduate forward Britny Edwards currently ranks fifth in the league in blocked shots (1.5 bpg), ninth in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and 11th in field-goal percentage (43.3).
SERIES HISTORY VS. EAST CAROLINA
Houston and East Carolina meet for the 11th time since the 2001-02 season, as the Cougars have won nine of the 10 previous meetings in the series.
The Cougars claimed the first eight wins in the series before ECU earned an overtime win in Hofheinz Pavilion during the 2009-10 season to snap the streak. Houston avenged the loss last season, posting a 77-60 victory over the Pirates at Hofheinz on national television.
Houston is a perfect 4-0 in the series when playing the Pirates in Greenville, N.C.
