Women's Tennis Halts Roadrunners, 7-0

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team claimed its third-straight win in dominant fashion on Sunday, blanking UTSA by a score of 7-0 at John E. Hoff Courts.
"We came out and played well in doubles and never really looked back," said head coach John Severance. "I'm really proud of the whole team today. It's always good to get a 7-0 win."
Charlotte Phillips and Laura Ring opened the match with a dominating 8-1 victory over UTSA's Maffezzolli and Carrillo and Liselot Koenen and Dionne Sanders followed with an 8-3 defeat of the Roadrunner duo of Hand and Menon to secure the doubles point.
Houston's top tandem of Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan completed the doubles sweep at the No. 1 position, defeating UTSA's Peana and Jonsson by a score of 8-4 to improve to 23-11 together since the start of the 2010-11 season.
The Cougars carried their dominant play over to singles action, winning all but one set for the sweep.
Koenen began the scoring with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Hand at the No. 4 position and Maja Kazimieruk followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Gandara-Gonzalez at the No. 5 spot to put Houston up 3-0 in the match.
Dionne Sanders made quick work of Carrillo at the No. 6 position in her first singles action of the spring, cruising past her opponent by a score of 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the victory for the Cougars.
Celia Fraser and Bryony Hunter would go on to win their singles matches to complete the sweep over UTSA.
The Cougars return to action at 10 a.m., Saturday, to play host to Sam Houston State.
