Despite a near season-best shooting performance against Tulane on Thursday, the Cougars dropped a 71-51 decision due in large part to 21 turnovers.
Senior guard Roxana Button snapped a recent shooting slump, going 5-of-11 from the field, 2-of-3 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe for a team-high 18 points. The Coppell, Texas, native continues to lead Conference USA in scoring with 17.4 points per game and looks to compete in her 116th-consecutive contest, which would rank as the sixth-longest streak in Houston history.
A pair of newcomers also continue to shine for Houston, as Amanda Lawson has scored in double figures in four-straight games and leads all freshmen in C-USA in scoring (9.3 ppg), while Terran Alford has shot 67 percent (14-of-21) over the past three games and is the top freshman rebounder in the league (6.1 rpg).
ABOUT MEMPHIS
Memphis has won seven of its last eight contests entering Sunday for an 18-5 overall record and ranks second in the C-USA standings with an 8-2 mark.
The Tigers feature the top offense in the league, leading C-USA in scoring (71.0 ppg), field goal percentage (41.8) and assists (15.3 apg). Memphis is also stingy on defense, allowing 59.2 points per contest and leading the league in steals (12.1 spg) and turnover margin (+5.9).
Preseason C-USA Player of the Year Brittany Carter paces the Tigers and ranks fifth in the league with 15.0 points per game, while fellow senior Jasmine Lee ranks sixth in scoring (14.8 ppg), third in field-goal percentage (53.0) and fourth in rebounds (9.5 rpg). Junior forward Nicole Dickson is the top threat from 3-point range, burying 41 treys this season at a 34-percent clip.
SERIES HISTORY VS. MEMPHIS
Houston and Memphis meet for the 22nd time in the series that dates to the 1996-97 season when both teams joined Conference USA, as the Cougars hold a slight 11-10 advantage.
The Cougars posted an 81-63 victory over Memphis last season in a nationally-televised contest for Houston's eighth-straight win against the Tigers. Brittney Scott (20) Courtney Taylor (19) and Porsche Landry (10) all scored in double figures in the win while Roxana Button also added nine points off a perfect shooting effort.
After losing the first five games played at Elma Roane Fieldhouse, Houston has claimed the last five wins played there dating back to its last loss on Feb. 23, 2001.
