HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team had its eight-point halftime lead vanish as Creighton connected on 10 of its 15 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes in a 75-54 loss on Saturday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Senior point guard Porsche Landry led Houston (4-6) with 14 points, while junior forward Te'onna Campbell notched her first-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars trailed by a score of 23-20 after the Bluejays' fifth 3-pointer of the opening half with 8:42 remaining, but would close on a 13-2 run while limiting Creighton without a field goal for the 33-25 halftime advantage.
Landry started the run with a fastbreak layup and Campbell followed by driving the lane for another layup as the Cougars took a 24-23 lead.
With 3:26 remaining, junior forward Marissa Ashton found Campbell in the lane for the easy layup, and with less than a minute left to play, Landry drove the lane and kicked out to Ashton who buried the 3-pointer to give Houston a nine-point advantage.
The Bluejays (5-2) connected on their first field goal in 10 minutes with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to five, and hit two more trifectas to take their first lead of the contest at 38-36 with 14:26 remaining.
Creighton drained its 10th long ball of the contest to stretch its lead to 10 points and cap a 21-3 run with 12:28 remaining before Campbell broke up the run with a jumper.
After falling back to a 12-point deficit, Houston clawed back to within seven points with 8:54 remaining following a Yasmeen Thompson 3-point play and free throws from Landry, but Creighton answered with three long-range bombs in less than two minutes to put the contest out of reach.
Creighton shot a blazing 61 percent (17-of-28) from the field in the second half, including a 10-of-13 clip from 3-point range, while the Cougars went cold, hitting only five field goals on 28 attempts (18 percent) in the final 20 minutes. The Bluejay's 15 treys set a Hofheinz Pavilion record.
Houston lost the rebounding battle by a 49-36 margin, while forcing 20 turnovers, including 12 steals, against only 15 miscues.
The Cougars will receive a two-week layoff before returning to action against Texas State on Dec. 22 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
