HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball forward Terran Alford was honored Monday as the Conference USA Freshman of the Week after a dominant performance against Rice on Saturday.
The weekly accolade is the first for Alford in her collegiate career and the third for the Cougars this season as Porsche Landry was named the Player of the Week on Nov. 14 and Amanda Lawson earned the top freshman award on Jan. 16.
Alford posted a solid all-around performance for the Cougars on Saturday as Houston's late rally fell short in a 58-50 loss to Rice.
The Oklahoma City, Okla., native posted 10 points and eight rebounds while recording a perfect 5-of-5 performance from the field in 32 minutes of play.
Alford also shined defensively, snagging a career-best three steals and swatting two shots while limiting Rice's Jessica Kuster to just a 4-of-14 effort from the field. Kuster, the lone player in C-USA averaging a double-double, collected only four points and three rebounds in the first half.
Alford played a pivotal role in Houston's breakout defensive effort that limited the Owls to just 23 percent shooting from the field. Houston's post presence outscored Rice by a 24-8 margin in the paint and swatted nine shots.
Alford currently leads the team and is tied for the league lead among freshmen with 6.3 rebounds per contest. Alford is one of only three players in C-USA this season to post 20 or more rebounds in a single game as the freshman snagged 20 boards in just her fourth collegiate game against Oral Roberts to tie the school record shared by Houston great Sancho Lyttle.
UP NEXT
The Cougars look to return to the win column against SMU at 7 p.m., Thursday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston dropped a 76-61 decision to the Mustangs earlier this season in Dallas as a late scoring drought doomed the Cougars.
Perhaps the most memorable game in Houston women's basketball history occurred the last time the two teams met at Hofheinz Pavilion on Jan. 30, 2011, as the Cougars trailed by six points with 27 seconds remaining before putting together a frantic 11-0 run for the five-point victory.
