HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball forward Amanda Lawson earned Conference USA's Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced Monday.
The award is the first-career honor for Lawson and marks the 11th time that a Cougar has garnered a weekly award in head coach Todd Buchanan's tenure at Houston.
Lawson posted 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in 37.5 minutes played while shooting 48 percent from the field (11-of-23) in contests against SMU and Southern Miss.
The Bryan, Texas, native has emerged as a second scoring option next to senior guard Roxana Button, scoring in double figures in both contests to extend her streak of scoring 10 or more points to three games.
Against SMU on Thursday, Lawson tallied 15 points off of a 6-of-14 effort from the field and played a pivotal role in two Houston runs to keep the Cougars in the contest.
Lawson posted 13 points in Sunday's loss to UAB, going 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Lawson currently ranks as the second active leading scorer for Houston with 8.3 points per game and leads the team in field goal percentage (39 percent) while ranking second on the squad with 5.1 rebounds per contest.
The Cougars return to action to play host to Tulsa at 7 p.m., Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
