HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's soccer team dropped a, 2-1, decision to LSU at Robertson Stadium Tuesday night. The Cougars late surge was not enough to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
"Another loss is hard to swallow, said head coach Susan Bush. "This is probably the hardest schedule in team history and it's tough to build confidence. I thought as the game went on and we made some adjustments and started playing better. The last 15 minutes we were pleased."
LSU proved to be very efficient early in the contest, scoring on their first shot attempt. Taryne Boudreau slipped one by keeper Cami Koski in the ninth minute after a pass into the box from teammate Allysha Chapman.
Houston had several great scoring opportunities early in the match that did not result in points. The Cougars had several attempts taken from point blank range that were saved by LSU goalkeeper Mo Isom. On one scoring opportunity in the 15th minute junior forward Katelyn Rhodes attempted a header just in front of Isom after a cross by Jasmine Martinez and Isom saved the attempt.
"We need to be sharper and finish our chances. We had an opportunity early, and if we put that away, the whole game changes. So for us it's just capitalizing on our chances and building on that. That will bring us confidence and more energy."
After LSU scored in the 73rd minute off a corner kick, the Cougars started to gel on offense. Houston had great scoring opportunities in the 78th, 80th, 87th minutes, none of which resulted in a score.
"We just need to have more of a sense of urgency and more of a threat in front of the goal," said goalkeeper Cami Koski "We just need to work out a few kinks. We've had a few chances in front of the goal; we just need to take advantage of our opportunities."
Houston finally capitalized on an opportunity in the 88th minute when senior forward Jessica Zavalza netted a goal after the ball rebounded off the crossbar following a Jasmine Martinez shot attempt. Zavalza pounced on the loose ball and found herself on-on-one with the keeper and she did not disappoint, knocking home her second goal of the season.
The goal brought the Cougars within one, but time was not on their side as only two minutes remained in the contest. LSU took the decision 2-1.
