Tennis Wraps Up Opening Day at SDSU Fall Classic

SAN DIEGO - Three Cougars reached the singles semifinals as well as two doubles teams to highlight the opening day of play for the University of Houston tennis team Friday at the SDSU Fall Classic at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The doubles tandem of Charlotte Phillips and Maja Kazimieruk kicked off play with an 8-3 victory over the Cal State Northridge duo of Simmons and Sinowy to advance to Saturday's semifinal round. The win marked Phillips first collegiate victory with the Scarlet and White.
The veteran duo of Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan followed with a thrilling 9-8(7) defeat of Utah's Miles and Putilina to join Phillips and Kazimieruk in the semifinals. With Friday's win, the Cougar tandem improved to 12-4 together dating back to last fall.
Kazimieruk, a junior from Poznan, Poland, continued her winning ways in singles action with a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing of San Diego's Cara Brown to advance to the semifinals of the blue draw.
Freshman Liselot Koenen earned her second-career victory by topping Cal State Northridge's Ryma Korab in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), while Pozzan will also play in Saturday's semifinals after a walkover victory.
