WACO, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to sixth-ranked Baylor in its season opener on Saturday in Waco.
"I thought we competed very well," head coach John Severance said. "We had opportunities to win more singles points against the sixth-ranked team in the country. We showed a lot of people there today that we're a competitive bunch and it's only a matter of time until we're nationally ranked."
Freshman Liselot Koenen and Dionne Sanders opened action by cruising past the Baylor duo of Abby Stainback and Doris Llamas by a score of 8-2, but Houston losses at the top two positions gave the Bears the early 1-0 advantage.
Koenen led off the singles portion of play with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Baylor's Larsen to score her first collegiate dual match victory and even the score at 1-1.
Baylor claimed the final five singles matches for the 6-1 victory, but the Cougars proved to be very competitive throughout the lineup.
Senior Giorgia Pozzan matched up against the nation's 14th-ranked player, taking 10 games off of Diana Nakic before eventually falling 7-5, 7-5.
In freshman Charlotte Phillips' first dual match, the U.K., native held an early 4-3 lead over Megan Horter but couldn't hold on in a 6-4, 6-2 loss.
The Cougars will play host to Colorado in their first home match at 1 p.m., Jan. 29 at John E. Hoff Courts.
